Making a piñata isn’t a quick craft but it is great fun at parties.

This is just one idea for decorating your piñata, you can be creative and make up your own designs.

What is a Piñata?

A piñata is a breakable container which is decorated and subsequently destroyed to release sweets and other treats.

Most commonly associated with Mexico, piñatas are actually thought to originate in China. The idea arrived in Europe in the 14th century and the Spanish took the ceremonial piñatas to Mexico where it is still part of the Mexican culture.

How to play piñata…

Hang the piñata so it can swing freely and away from windows and other breakable things. Blindfold each child one at a time, spin them around and let them take one swing at the piñata. Continue until it breaks.

  • Because a piñata requires at least 3 layers, it will take at least three days to make the bird piñata shell since it needs to dry thoroughly between each layer. Make sure you have enough time.
  • Before decorating your piñata, you may want to turn it upside down and give it a light tap to get rid of any bits which have been left inside.
  • When cutting the tassels into the crepe paper, cut several strips at the same time.
  • When gluing the crepe paper to the piñata, lay it on its side on top of a bowl so it doesn’t roll around.
  • Save some money and shred some newspaper instead of crepe paper when filling the piñata.
